  • Generally, it is recommended to use the index finger for the first fret, the middle finger for the second, and so on.
  • Turn your wrist up towards the headstock to help keep the fingers in the right position.

Basic Chords :

So, let’s begin. First thing first, where should you put your fingers to play the chords correctly? There are basically four vertical lines in a ukulele which means the four strings. These are G, C, E and A. You can tune down your ukulele in different ways and depending on the tuning your strings will be ordered. If you are playing a G-C-E-A tune, then the G string is going to be very close to your nose. Usually G is the thickest string and A the first string is the thinnest string.

While playing the ukulele the first chord that you need to learn to tackle is the C chord. You need to use one finger to play this. While playing C you need to fret G, C and E strings. However, you need to use your ring finger and fret the A string.

How to fingering the chords :

Next, fingering the F chord can be a little tricky. In this case, you need to use two of your fingers and at the same time you need to fret the other strings. It will be something like, your index finger on E string, middle finger on the G string. While you are placing your fingers make sure that they are arching over the strings.

Another basic chord for beginners is the G7 chord. To play the G7 chord in your ukulele, place your index finger on the E string, then middle finger on C and ring finger on A string. You are keeping the g string open. You need to use the tips of the fingers for holding the chords.

While learning about the chords you also need to know about the symbols for the chords. If you are totally new to chords, then you must know that capital M means major chord and lowercase m means minor chord.

When you are trying to learn about the chords. It is very important how you hold the ukulele. Now there are obviously two scenarios. If you are using your right hand, then you need to hold the neck of the ukulele with the help of your left hand. The opposite goes if you are a left-handed user. Another small but effective tips are, always try to play the instrument standing. In this way you can apply more methods. The correct way to hold a ukulele depends on its size too. But the main point is that you need to hold it in a relaxed manner. Try to keep it upright and against your belly.

Reading a Chord box :

To understand how to play  the chords, you have to have knowledge about chord boxes. Chord boxes are basically the chords written in boxes. It is the graphical representation of the chords which will help you to understand how and where you should place your fingers to play a certain chord. In a chord box there is a vertical and horizontal line. The horizontal line is for the frets and the vertical line is for the strings.

As a beginner you need to start with the easiest way, that is playing the down strokes with the index finger. You will curl up the other fingers and then brush down the index finer through the strings. The next strum you are going to learn is the D U which means down strum and up strum. This is basically you will go for both down strokes with upstrokes. When you are mixing the two strokes, you can get some help if you roll your wrist a little back and forth. You shouldn’t just keep the wrist stiff, then it can result in jamming the fingers. When you are strumming, strum it in time. that means you need to catch the beat. There are mainly 4 beats and you have to think that you are dividing the music equally in 4 parts.

Always start with the simpler chords. For any instrument you need to learn the basics first. For ukulele, it would be the G7, F and chord C. There are some songs which can be played by only one chord, for example  Baby Please Don’t  Go. This type of song will assist you to learn a specific chord.
